District heating & steam

The combined heat and power plant in Salaspils, a city near capital Riga in Latvia, is a highly efficient 24.2 MWt wood-fired combined heat and power plant with a high pressure (52 bar) water tube steam boiler of 20 MWt and a 4.5 MWe steam turbine. The plant provides electricity and heat to the local district net. This equates to the consumption of approximately 15,000 households.

In this plant, pruning waste is used as fuel to generate both heat and electricity. During combustion, the released flue gases flow into the boiler, creating steam. This steam powers a turbine to produce electricity. Additionally, a flue gas condenser enhances heat production by about 25% by condensing water vapor from the flue gases. Thanks to this innovative design, nearly 100% of the wood’s energy is utilized.
