HoSt Group secures €26 million EBRD financing to build one of Latvia’s largest biomethane plants

A strategic partnership with the EBRD
The EBRD’s backing highlights the bank’s growing role in reinforcing Europe’s energy security, expanding biomethane production capacity, and accelerating decarbonization in hard-to-abate industries. The EBRD is a key implementing partner of the EU’s InvestEU programme, which supports sustainable investment, innovation, and job creation across the region.
EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso welcomed the partnership, noting that supporting HoSt’s expansion helps strengthen both Latvia’s and the wider Baltic region’s energy market, and framed the investment in biomethane as central to accelerating the shift toward low-carbon energy systems in hard-to-abate sectors, while reinforcing energy security across Latvia and Europe.
HoSt Group CFO Arthur Vlaanderen described the agreement as a major catalyst for the company’s long-term strategy. He explained that, alongside its own capital investment, the EBRD financing accelerates HoSt’s mission to develop, own, and operate critical green energy infrastructure, calling it proof of the strong commercial viability of biomethane projects. He added that transforming the site into one of Latvia’s largest biomethane facilities anchors circular energy production in the region and makes a tangible contribution to Europe’s energy security.
Signing ceremony in Riga
The signing ceremony, held on Friday, 5 June, in Riga, brought together senior representatives from HoSt Group and the EBRD alongside high-level European and Latvian officials. Attendees included HoSt Group CFO Arthur Vlaanderen, HoSt Group Latvia Managing Director Irina Krasta, and HoSt Group Business Developer Mariusz Badura, together with EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso, Valdis Dombrovskis (European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity), Māris Kučinskis (Minister of Finance of Latvia), H.E. Carl Peersman (Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Latvia), Andreea Moraru (EBRD Managing Director for Central Europe and the Baltics), Jean-Marc Petterschmitt (EBRD Managing Director for Corporate Sector), and Natalia Lacorzana (EBRD Director, Head of Natural Resources).
Powering growth through Energy as a service
The Lēdurga project reflects HoSt’s broader approach of investing in and operating its own renewable energy plants while manufacturing key technology in-house an approach that allows the company to refine its systems faster, better understand customer needs, and maximize its impact on the transition to renewable energy.
Under Energy-as-a-Service of HoSt Bioenergy Systems, HoSt acts as the sole owner and operator of the facility through its subsidiary, Next Biogas, taking full responsibility for engineering, day-to-day operations, and commercial output. This structure lets the original site owners benefit from the partnership while remaining focused on their agricultural operation
