New biogas plant to support low-carbon farming in the UK
Located at Grosvenor Farms on the Eaton Estate near the city of Chester, the facility will convert approximately 150,000 tonnes of manure and agricultural residues annually into biomethane. The renewable gas will be injected directly into the UK’s National Transmission System, the national gas grid, contributing to a more sustainable energy mix. A key strength of the project lies in its circular design. The feedstock will be sourced directly from Grosvenor Farms, creating a highly efficient local system where waste streams are transformed into valuable resources.
Farming in both a comercially and environmentally sustainable way
Mark Roach, Managing Director, Grosvenor Farms, said: “This is a hugely significant investment into the future of farming at Grosvenor, strengthening our commitment to operating in both a commercially sustainable and environmentally responsible way. We believe the facility will result in an estimated 8,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent avoided a year – equal to taking 1,800 cars off the road – while generating enough biomethane, a renewable energy, to heat 6,000 homes annually, contributing to the UK’s resources via the national grid.
In addition, CO₂ released during the upgrading process will be captured and liquefied for reuse in industry, further improving the overall carbon footprint and creating an additional valuable product stream.

Reducing carbon emissions
The project directly contributes to Grosvenor’s ambition to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, while aligning with HoSt’s goal of enabling 25 million tonnes of CO₂ savings by 2032. By working together, both organisations strengthen their impact and demonstrate how integrated solutions can deliver tangible environmental and economic value.
