How can biomethane be used?
Biomethane’s energy equivalence to natural gas makes it one of the most versatile renewable energy carriers available. The appropriate end use depends on local infrastructure, offtake agreements, and the scale of production.
Grid injection
The most common application is feeding biomethane directly into the existing natural gas grid, where it displaces fossil gas for heating, cooking, and industrial processes without requiring any changes to downstream infrastructure or end-user equipment. Depending on the gas grid specifications, HoSt can offer different solutions to meet the gas grid injection requirements.
Transport fuel (bio-CNG)
Biomethane can be compressed into bio-CNG for use at public or private refueling stations or distributed by tanker via a virtual pipeline to locations without a gas grid connection.
Industrial gas supply
Biomethane can supply industrial processes that currently run on natural gas, offering a direct, infrastructure-compatible route to decarbonizing heat-intensive operations in food processing, chemicals, ceramics and other sectors.
CO2 as a valuable co-product
Biogas upgrading always produces a CO2-rich stream alongside the biomethane. Rather than venting this biogenic CO2, it can be captured, purified, and liquefied for commercial use in the food and beverage industry, in greenhouse horticulture for crop stimulation, or for industrial gas applications. This turns an inherent by-product of the upgrading process into an additional revenue stream.
