What is feedstock?

Feedstock is an organic material that micro-organisms break down inside a digester in the absence of oxygen, a process known as anaerobic digestion, to produce biogas and digestate. It is also referred to as substrate and can range from agricultural residues to industrial and municipal waste streams. The composition of the feedstock, including its dry matter content, organic and nutrient balance, directly affects how much biogas a plant produces and how stable the digestion process remains. Because feedstock is the starting point of the entire process, HoSt designs each biogas plant’s feeding, mixing, and digester technology around the specific feedstock or feedstock mix a client wants to process.
