What is the process of CO₂ liquefaction?

The process of CO2 liquefaction starts with the CO2 stream separated during biogas upgrading, which is then compressed, cooled, and purified to the point where it condenses into a liquid. Achieving food-grade quality requires additional purification steps to remove trace impurities and contaminants, ensuring the liquid CO2 meets the standards required for use in food and beverage applications. Once liquefied, the CO2 is stored in dedicated pressurized, insulated tanks before being transported off-site to customers in the food and beverage, horticulture, or industrial gas sectors. At HoSt’s Lorca Bioenergy project, this CO2 liquefaction process is integrated directly alongside the biogas upgrading systems, supplied by Bright Renewables, so that biomethane production and CO2 liquefaction operate as a single, coordinated process on-site.
