How can biogas be used?
Biogas has several practical applications, and the right choice depends on local infrastructure, feedstock volume, and commercial objectives.
Electricity and heat generation (combined heat and power)
Raw or cleaned biogas can be combusted in a gas engine or combined heat and power (CHP) unit to generate electricity and usable heat simultaneously. This is a well-established route, particularly suitable for on-site energy consumption.
Grid injection as biomethane
After upgrading, biomethane meets gas grid quality standards and can be fed directly into the existing natural gas infrastructure. This is increasingly the preferred route in Europe, as it decouples production from consumption and enables the gas to be used by any end user connected to the grid.
Transport fuel (bio-CNG and bio-LNG)
Biomethane can be compressed (bio-CNG) or liquefied (bio-LNG) for use as transport fuel. Bio-LNG is well suited to heavy transport, including lorries and vessels, where the energy density of the fuel is important.
CO2 recovery and CO2 liquefaction
The CO2 separated during biogas upgrading is biogenic and can be captured, purified, and liquefied for use in food and beverage production, greenhouse horticulture, or industrial applications. This turns a process by-product into a revenue stream. Our technology can deliver food-grade CO2.
