What subsidies and incentives are available for biogas plants?
Biogas plants can access several types of support, and the mix varies by country. The main categories are capital grants that cover part of the investment cost, production-based incentives such as feed-in tariffs or premiums per unit of biomethane or electricity, and tradable instruments such as guarantees of origin, renewable energy certificates and carbon credits linked to the carbon intensity (CI) score. Some markets add tax credits or lower rates for biomethane used as transport fuel. Most schemes reward waste-based feedstock and long-term production, so the support a project can claim depends on its location, feedstock and end-product.
