Biogas upgrading
Membrane technology
Biogas upgrading systems from HoSt use in-house membrane technology, to efficiently upgrade the biogas to biomethane with >99.5% methane recovery – for optimal biomethane utilization. During this process, raw biogas is purified by removing impurities such as CO2 – where selective membranes allow the passage of CO2 but not methane. This method offers high separation efficiency and results in the highest possible biomethane yield.

Biomethane production
Biogas purification technology converts biogas into biomethane with a prefabricated, modular, and containerized system. This compact design results in easy integration into any new or existing biogas plant. With biogas utilization, the value of the biogas production is maximized while simultaneously additional revenue is created. Any type of biogas plant is suitable for our biogas upgrading technology – enhancing the efficiency of the whole biogas facility.
Frequently asked questions
How does biogas upgrading work?
Upgrading separates the CO2 and trace impurities from raw biogas so that what remains is almost pure methane. HoSt uses membrane technology, which splits the gas by molecular size without chemicals or added heat, giving a compact, low-maintenance system. The result is biomethane at grid quality. More information.
What methane content does upgraded biomethane reach?
Upgrading lifts the methane content to between 90 and 98%, at which point biomethane is energy equivalent to fossil natural gas and can be injected into the grid or used as transport fuel. The exact figure depends on the grid specifications in your country. More information.
What are the advantages of biogas upgrading?
Upgrading turns biogas into a product that reaches far more end users: it can enter the existing gas grid, be liquefied to bio-LNG or compressed to bio-CNG, and it decouples production from on-site demand. It also opens a second revenue stream, because the separated biogenic CO2 can be recovered and sold. More information.
How does membrane upgrading work?
Membrane upgrading passes the biogas through selective membranes that let CO2 permeate while methane is retained, so the two are separated by molecular size alone. Because it uses no solvents or added heat, it is simple to operate and integrates as an add-on to the biogas plant. More information.
