What are the advantages of biogas upgrading?
The main advantage of upgrading biogas is that it turns biogas into a versatile, storable, and transportable renewable gas that can replace fossil natural gas across a wide range of applications. Unlike raw biogas, which is typically limited to on-site use in a combined heat and power (CHP) unit, biomethane can be injected into the existing gas grid, distributing renewable energy far beyond the plant itself. It can also be compressed into bio-CNG or liquefied into bio-LNG, making it usable as a transport fuel for cars, heavy trucks, and vessels, including through a virtual pipeline to sites without a grid connection. Upgrading additionally opens the door to valorizing the separated CO2: at HoSt’s Lorca Bioenergy project, biogas upgrading is combined with CO2 liquefaction technology to produce food-grade liquid CO2 as an additional revenue stream, alongside the biomethane itself.
