Biogas is a renewable gas produced when micro-organisms break down organic material in the absence of oxygen, a process called anaerobic digestion (AD). It consists primarily of methane (CH4, 55 to 70%) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). Feedstocks include manure, food waste, crop residues, slaughterhouse waste, fats, oils and greases (FOGS), and sewage sludge.
