How is biogas produced?

Biogas is produced through anaerobic digestion. In sealed, heated digester tanks, and micro-organisms break down organic material in the absence of oxygen. HoSt plants operate under mesophilic conditions (around 40°C). Thermophilic conditions (around 55°C) can be applied in the after-digester, depending on the feedstock and required process stability. The process produces two outputs: biogas, which is collected under the membrane roof of the digester, and digestate, a nutrient-rich residue that can be applied to agricultural land as a biofertilizer. Raw biogas contains H2S (a toxic chemical compound that damages the membranes of a biogas upgrader), which is corrosive. HoSt removes it biologically within the digester tank itself, reducing operational costs and protecting downstream equipment.
