Biomethane is produced in two stages. First, organic material such as manure, food waste or agricultural residues is broken down by micro-organisms in an anaerobic digestion plant, producing raw biogas. This raw biogas consists primarily of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO₂), alongside trace impurities including hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) and water vapour. Biogas can also be obtained from other sources, such as wastewater treatment plants.

In the second stage, the raw biogas passes through a biogas upgrading system, where CO₂ and impurities are removed. The result is a gas with a methane concentration of 90-97%, meeting the quality standards required for gas grid injection or use as a vehicle fuel.
