Which slaughterhouse and meat processing waste streams suit anaerobic digestion?
Animal by-products, blood, paunch and FOGS: Category 2 and 3 animal by-products, paunch content, flotation sludge and fats, oils and greases (FOGS) all digest well and carry a high energy value. HoSt sizes the feeding and mixing system to keep the process stable despite the variable composition of abattoir waste.
Sanitation and thermal pressure hydrolysis: Animal by-products must be heat-treated before the digestate can be reused. HoSt includes sanitation within the plant scope, and for higher-risk category 2 material, HoSt ThermalTreat applies thermal pressure hydrolysis to meet the rules and improve conversion. Recovered heat preheats incoming feedstock.

- Electricity and heat for the site
Meat processing is heat and power intensive. Raw biogas can run a CHP unit that supplies the site directly, or be upgraded to biomethane for grid injection or transport fuel. - Lower animal by-product disposal costs
Digesting waste on site reduces the volume sent for external rendering or disposal, turning a standing cost into energy and recovered nutrients. - Digestate handling
HoSt separates digestate into a thick fraction for reuse and a thin fraction that can be further treated on site, matching local discharge and fertiliser rules.
Slaughterhouse biogas plant at Son
At Son in the Netherlands, HoSt built an industrial biogas plant that digests slaughterhouse waste, fluid food-industry waste and flotation sludge. A main digester and an after-digester with integrated gas storage give stable digestion at a short residence time under 15 days. The plant has a capacity of 65,000 tonnes a year and produces 2.5 MWe of electricity and heat. Digestate is separated into a thick fraction dried to 80% dry matter and a thin fraction treated on site before discharge. HoSt continues to provide service at the plant.
