Pre-engineering

Pre-engineering is the early technical study that translates a bioenergy project concept into a defined, costed plant design before detailed engineering begins. Building on the outcomes of a feasibility study, it establishes the technology configuration, key equipment, plant layout, and a refined cost estimate, giving project owners the technical basis they need for permitting, financing, and the next engineering phase.

What is pre-engineering?

Pre-engineering is the phase in which a bioenergy concept, already confirmed viable through a feasibility study, is worked out into a concrete plant design. Using the feedstock data, output targets and site conditions established earlier, HoSt’s engineers define the core process configuration, size the principal equipment such as digesters, feeding systems and biogas upgrading, and map out how these systems interface with each other and with the site. The result is a project basis that provides reliable technical inputs for permit applications, financing discussions and, where required, a subsequent FEED (Front-End Engineering Design) study or direct entry into full EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) execution.

Why is pre-engineering important?

Pre-engineering is important because it replaces early assumptions with a defined, technically grounded design at the point in a project where changes are still cheap to make. Bioenergy plants bring together process, civil, mechanical, and electrical systems that all need to work together from day one, and decisions on digester sizing, feedstock handling, or heat recovery strategy made at this stage have a lasting impact on capital cost, performance, and return on investment. Resolving these questions during pre-engineering, rather than once construction is underway, avoids costly redesigning and protects the project’s schedule. It also unlocks the practical next steps of a project: permit authorities need a defined plant concept before they can assess an application, and lenders and investors need a credible technical basis and cost estimate before approving financing. Because HoSt operates as a turnkey supplier, the same engineering team that carries out the pre-engineering study can take the project through FEED, EPC delivery, and commissioning, giving clients continuity and a single accountable partner from the first design decisions to a fully operational plant.
