Can feedstocks be mixed?
Yes, feedstocks can be and often are mixed, a practice known as co-digestion, to achieve a more stable process and a higher biogas yield than a single feedstock could deliver on its own. Combining a base feedstock, such as manure, with energy-rich co-substrates like FOGS, food waste, or crop residues raises the organic loading rate while balancing dry matter content, nutrient levels, and the carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) ratio. HoSt’s mixing and dosing systems, such as the HoSt Mixing / Dosing Feeder® and HoSt Moving Floor Feeder®, are designed to blend varied inputs into a homogeneous, pumpable mass before it enters the digester. Inside the digester, mixers such as the HoSt GiantMix®, HoSt PropMix®, and HoSt SpiralMix® keep the blended feedstock in suspension, prevent floating layers and sedimentation, and support maximum degradation of the mixed organic matter.
